SBM teamed with CWWA, Inc of Medina, Ohio to design building systems and various process systems for a new manufacturing facility at Shin-Etsu Silicones of America’s campus in Akron, Ohio. This facility expanded Shin-Etsu, whose headquarters is in Japan. The plan expanded production capabilities for multiple products including silicone elastomers, lubricants, emulsifiers, and liquid injection moldings. The design considered safety, ease of installation and maintenance, everyday production efficiencies, and need for future expansion. The project consisted of multiple design and construction phases.

SBM was responsible for site and civil design, process piping design, and electrical design. Working closely with CWWA, process piping, process equipment specifications, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and electrical layouts were designed. SBM modeled the facility in Revit, a 3D building information modeling program, to allow full coordination of building structure and mechanical, electrical, and process piping systems. All major process equipment and their connections were modeled in detail for accurate coordination. This detailed modeling was provided to the selected installing contractor for assistance in his fabrication process to help reduce the time need between the selection of the contractor and the production of the piping. This modeling also minimized the number of construction RFIs and helped to bring the project in under budget. The project was finished before the anticipated completion date. SBM was involved at every phase of the project, working with all team members from site surveyor, to building owners/operators, to the installing contractors.
